The Worst Day Of Daredevil's Life

1. A Devil From The Ashes

Daredevil Born Again
Marvel Comics/Dave Mazzucchelli

Born Again is all about Daredevil's resurrection, and while the character would be put through gruelling scenarios later down the line by writers like Ann Nocenti, Brian Bendis, Ed Brubaker and Mark Waid, Miller's opus will forever remain Matt Murdock's most testing time.

Wilson Fisk's campaign to derail the Hell's Kitchen attorney's life was orchestrated over several months, targeted others, and fundamentally altered the relationship between the two characters going forward. It immortalised their rivalry as one of the medium's most virulent, laid the foundations for Murdock's own revenge, and defined Daredevil for an entire generation. The character was made during this run, and while putting any hero through a Kingpin-sized blender is likely to yield dramatic results, Miller masterminded Daredevil's downfall better than anyone else did, even if later writers - like Ann Nocenti - managed to impart a bigger impression on the mythos in the years following.

So, in a strange way, Born Again is both Daredevil's worst and best day. This was his Five Way Revenge, his Death of Jean DeWolff - the defining moment in the character's storied career as Hell's Kitchen main hero.

Most important of all, however, is that Born Again set a precedent for excellence for The Man Without Fear. No other character in Marvel's library can boast a bibliography as magnificent as Daredevil's, and while it's a tragic one in many respects, Matt Murdock's worst days are also kind of his greatest.

Content Producer/Presenter

WhatCulture's very own resident movie guy, Ewan has been working in the content creation biz for over 10 years now, having started as a freelance contributor to WhatCulture Gaming all the way back in 2015. After graduating with a First-Class Honours in History from Northumbria University in 2017 (where he won a prize for a totally killer dissertation on the Watergate years), Ewan took on the role of Comics Editor at WhatCulture and quickly developed WhatCulture Comics into one of the biggest superhero-focused channels on YouTube. He followed this with a brief hiatus at Screen Rant in 2021, where he worked across the Gaming and Film sections as a writer and editor, before returning to WhatCulture as a Senior Content Producer / Presenter in 2023. He started his own podcast, We Love Dad Movies, in 2022, and has contributed several written pieces to the Eisner-nominated comics website Shelfdust as well. In his current role, Ewan incorporates his love of cinema, comic books, and history into written pieces and video essays for WhatCulture's Film & TV channel, as well as WhatCulture Gaming and WhatCulture Horror, with a particular focus on nineties-era Dad Movies, old school Westerns, and Golden Age Hollywood Noir. John Carpenter is his fave, and he thinks Batman Beyond should never have been cancelled. If that's your vibe, you'll probably like his stuff.
