Since the release of The Rise of Skywalker last year, Star Wars actors John Boyega has been increasingly vocal about the negative experience he had with the sequel trilogy.

As well as addressing the racist boycott that was trending when he first got cast for Episode VII, Boyega has criticised Disney for the way they handled black characters. His comments were aimed at how the character of Finn was marketed and built up to be a major driving force for the sequel trilogy, only for him to be pushed aside to make room for Daisy Ridley's Rey and Adam Driver's Kylo Ren, saying how they got all of the "nuance".

He also pointed out how Oscar Issac, Kelly Marie Tran, and Naomi Ackie got similar treatment. Kelly Marie Tran herself suffered greatly due to racist harassment online, forcing her to quit social media.

John Boyega's candid comments are vital if the film industry is to come to terms with its issues with race and move forward in a more positive, progressive way.
