2. Mel Gibson Considers The Marvel Formula To Be Irresponsible Filmmaking

What He Said

“To talk about the violence question, look at any Marvel movie. They’re more violent than anything that I’ve done, but [in my movies,] you give a s--- about the characters, which makes it matter more. That’s all I’ll say.”

Why He Said It

Mel Gibson has never shied away from depicting violence in his films, but there is a method to the style of violence he employes in his stories, something that he feels Marvel movies apparently lack. While promoting his movie Hacksaw Ridge in 2016, Gibson was questioned as to the need to put so many violent and disturbing scenes in his movie.

In what might have been an attempt to deflect the question, Gibson pointed towards the MCU movies, calling them out for having 'violence without conscience'.

Gibson's criticism takes direct aim at one of the biggest problems that Marvel has had ever since the first Avengers movie: their reliance on big, disposable, faceless CGI armies for the heroes to fight against without drawing much blood or having any deeper consequences of the violence aside from the occasional, temporarily broken back or minor character death. Permanent death seems to occur very rarely in the MCU, which takes away from its emotional heft.
