8. Redline (2009)
What To Expect: Very Fast & Definitely Furious
Plot: Every five years an illegal drag race takes place on a different alien planet that makes Death Race 2000 look like a toddlers first bike ride. The film opens with the 'Yellowline', a qualifier of sorts for the main event, with the films hero J.P. wiping out near the finish courtesy of a bomb. Still qualifying, J.P heads for the Redline which is taking place on Roboworld, a militarised planet run by cyborgs intent on killing all the racers with insanely destructive weapons. Throw in weird aliens, the mafia and a love interest and you have a highly entertaining adrenaline ride that makes Fast & Furious look like Sluggish & Scared. The directorial debut of Takeshi Koike and released by Madhouse Inc, this film was over seven years in the making and the time and effort spent shows in its breath-taking animation. The visuals are so exhilarating and the action so visceral it is the perfect example of what animation can do better than live-action films. If you like fast cars, big explosions and nose-bleeding action then Redline is for you.
