7. Metropolis (2001)

What To Expect: Blade Runner: A.I.
Plot: Metropolis is set in a futuristic, er, metropolis where robots and humans co-exist. The city's robots are essentially second class citizens and discriminated against, persecuted and segregated to the lower levels of the city. When the city's unofficial ruler, Duke Red, unveils his new skyscraper the ceremony is disrupted by a robot which is then destroyed. This sets off a chain of events that sees a detective and his nephew drawn into a huge conspiracy involving an organ trafficking scientist, a secret super weapon and a next-gen robot girl who may hold the key to the survival of the city. Made by acclaimed anime director Rintaro and Akira creator Katsuhiro Otomo, Metropolis looks amazing. The animation is more reminiscent of that fifties 'atomic age' look (as opposed to a gleaming futuristic look) which gives it an old-fashioned charm not unlike game series Fallout and with ground breaking music (including Ray Charles) setting the tone, Metropolis remains one of the masterpieces of anime.
