It may seem a little crass to call Steve McQueen's Best Picture winner "the definitive slavery film", but that's exactly what it feels like. With electrifying performances from Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael Fassbender and Lupita Nyong'o, and a brutally matter-of-fact approach to its fascinatingly grim true story, it's certainly not a film easily shaken.

Best Picture winners often have a habit of falling by the wayside and being forgotten quickly after winning the award (The Artist, anyone?), but 12 Years A Slave's savage history lesson and emotionally devastating tale of survival are sure to endure for decades if not more. An absolute triumph.
