10 Best Documentary Films To Watch On Disney+

The House of Mouse's best real life stories...

Free Solo
National Geographic

Disney+ has brought the Disney catalogue into many homes since its launch in the UK and Ireland back in March. While Star Wars and Marvel may have been the big selling points for many new subscribers, the streaming service has a surprising amount of quality content on offer.

Not least among these are the educational films that are on offer. Disney owns National Geographic and the service has provided a huge library of documentaries to devour from this branch alone.

However, in addition to this, there are a host of films available that expand both on the history of Disney and on the world in which it exists. Stories of animation and creation sit side by side with stories of the impact the Human Race has had on the world around it. A-List celebrities both narrate and appear in some documentaries that would give any viewer pause to think.

However, like much of Disney's output, there are many examples of uplifting and inspiring films on offer, advancing their impressive reach over various sectors of the industry. The Pixar Story tells the tale of one of the most successful acquisitions Disney ever made, while older documentaries like Empire of Dreams tell the stories from behind the scenes on one of the biggest sagas in cinematic history.

There is much to digest on Disney+ but, for your consideration, here are ten of the best documentaries on offer.

10. The Imagineering Story

The sentimental look at the history of Disneyland and its various iterations has made more than one reviewer utter 'WOW' in the first of its six episodes along. This is a bright and shining look through the growth of the Disney Empire.

Warts and all this is not. There are stories to be told about the hardship that some of the Disney employees faced along the way, yet that is not this story. But, it doesn't feel intentionally left out. Rather, this feels like a showcase of achievement despite adversity.

While the portrait of Walt Disney as both visionary pioneer and childlike glee-maker is not a new image, it has never been so fitting.

The series does examine some of the various failures that the company has experienced along the way in terms of its theme part expansion, and the controversies in revising some of the classics, yet it spends far more time depicting the things that went right.

That said, much like the Pixar Story, this does not come across too strongly of a propaganda piece. Instead, it seems like an essential piece of Disney history, created especially for the Disney+ platform, rather than being retrofit later to fit the medium.

The closing episode that discusses the upcoming projects on Disney's slate is sure to leave fans hungry for more. This is a must watch for those interested in the story of creation, narrated by the wonderful Angela Bassett.
