10 Best Sci-Fi Horror Films To Watch Halloween 2020

1. The Thing (1982)

Cube Death
Universal

The inhabitants of a US scientific research base in Antarctica are startled by the arrival of a Norwegian helicopter trying to hunt and kill a dog that is fleeing them. After incapacitating the Norwegians and allowing the dog to sleep in their kennels, some of the US team led by R.J. "Mac" MacReady (Kurt Russell) decide to travel to the Norwegian base, and on arriving, discover the mutilated, warped bodies of the Norwegian crew, as well as evidence that they had found an extra-terrestrial life form.

It's only after the alien takes the form of one of their own that the US crew realise that the "thing" is capable of shape shifting and disguising itself as any member of the crew that they realise the immense danger that they are in. Led by Mac, the surviving members of the crew do all they can to root out the alien as their numbers gradually dwindle.

The Thing is a masterclass in paranoia, as the audience is kept at a constant state of tension and unease, never knowing who may be a doppelganger and who isn't.

This film has become so iconic and revered in it's own right that many viewers are unaware of the fact that this a remake, as it has completely overshadowed the 1951 original and John W. Campbell's 1938 novel.

The centrepiece of this film is the brilliantly crafted practical effects, bringing the creature to life in all of its misshapen, disgusting forms. One of the goriest mainstream horror films, The Thing combines it's remarkably tense atmosphere with these astonishing practical effects to create one of the most endearing and spectacular horror films of all time, and is definitely worth a watch this Halloween.
