10 Cancelled X-Men Movies We Almost Got

7. Gambit

Gambit Channing Tatum
Fox & Marvel

Fox’s X-Men Universe was, to put it mildly, poorly planned. Sure, with the MCU there’s some logic gaps and mini retcons to the earlier movies, but in general it’s 20+ movies in sync with each other, coming together at the perfect time to produce a satisfying finale.

X-Men, on the other hand, needed a total reboot while it was in motion with Days Of Future Past. Even then, it still botched the sequels, fumbled the legendary Dark Phoenix saga for a second time, and just generally has a lack of synergy.

The best X-Men related films recently have been Deadpool and Logan, who both made the smart choice to get out of the central continuity’s mess.

Gambit was, at one time, backed by considerable hype. However, after delay (after delay after delay), no roadmap and the franchise’s tone diverting somewhat from what Gambit needed, that hype cooled, then vanished.

With Taylor Kitsch’s Gambit in X-Men: Origins being poorly received (like pretty much everything else in the movie), Channing Tatum was cast. Rupert Wyatt, Doug Liman and Gore Verbinski were all attached to direct, but subsequently dropped out. Fox kept pushing the project back and immediately after Disney acquired the rights, they cancelled it.
