10 Cancelled X-Men Movies We Almost Got

How different would the scope of superhero movies today be if this one had gone through?

Stan Lee and Chris Claremont were in talks with Carcolo Pictures in 1989 to make a Wolverine & The X-Men movie, and behind the scene was packed with stars.

Fresh off The Land Before Time, Gary Goldman was writing, while James Cameron was producing and his then wife Kathryn Bigelow directing. When the project fell through, Cameron moved on to Terminator 2 while Bigelow made Point Break. Things definitely worked out better for him there, but in 2008 she’d get her revenge, beating the favoured Avatar to the Oscar with The Hurt Locker.

In front of the camera, Bob Hoskins was the pick for Wolverine, but it’s hard to think he would have been even close to Hugh Jackman’s performances. Angela Bassett was slated for Storm, which would have been phenomenal and so much better than what we got.

The film was iced when James Cameron and Stan Lee decided to pursue a Spider-Man movie instead.

This too never materialised, but it’s thought Stan Lee’s enthusiasm with both projects played a significant role in Bryan Singer & Sam Raimi’s X-Men & Spider-Man trilogies respectively getting funded.
