Ripped Off : Scarface

In Scarface, Al Pacino brings to life a ruthless and loveable character everyone man wishes they were, kind of. It’s a movie that goes over the top with everything, the violence, the sex, the drugs... oh my God, the drugs. And the climax of the movie perfectly illustrates the excesses of the movie as Tony Montana drowns himself in a pool of cocaine, before arming himself with a machine gun to face an army of assassins all by himself.

The laws of the universe dictate that a movie like this must copied. So when Billa 2: The Beginning, which is both a sequel and a prequel to the Tamil classic Billa, copied the premise of Scarface, it was exciting.

In Billa 2, Billa like Tony Montana, immigrates to a new more prosperous country. He then ascends through the world of organized crimes and becomes a kingpin. Like Tony Montana, Billa has a meteoric rise and a meteoric fall.

However, the execution is just disappointing. Scarface takes the viewer on a ride through the valley of craziness, excesses, and over the top violence. Billa 2, on the other hand, plays it close to the vest. Instead of it being a wild roller coaster ride of fun, it ends up being a school bus ride to elementary school. It does not take any risks, nor does it capture the glory of the original. It's like Scarface Lite.
