10 Directors With Make Or Break Movies For 2020

2. Darren Lynn Bousman - Spiral

After Saw's last outing, Jigsaw, completely sank in 2017 - landing a putrid 33% on Rotten Tomatoes - it looked as though the franchise had finally ran its course after an admirable eight movies.

Then, out of nowhere Chris Rock announced that he had written the treatment for, would be starring in and would be an executive producer on the upcoming ninth Saw movie. Confirmed to be a story within the current Saw universe, not a reboot and yet not an immediate sequel to Jigsaw, the idea of a comedic legend like Rock creating a new chapter in the franchise was an intriguing one to say the least.

Darren Lynn Bousman - the director responsible for Saw II, III and IV - is also set to return for the film which has now been confirmed to be titled as Spiral.

A lot is riding on this apparent new direction for the universe, with Samuel L. Jackson starring in the flick, too. Will it be able to set itself apart from the stale tropes which have neutered the series in recent times and produce a fresh spin on the gory decision-making narrative?

If it doesn't, you can bet that not only will the Saw universe be dead and buried, but also Rock's fledgling career as a visionary horror creator.
