The Joker scenes were the biggest loss since the trailers played up his involvement. A big concern for the studio was the abusive relationship between Harley and Joker, which is played as a straight romance now. Originally it was much darker, with an extended scene of Joker torturing her, slapping her across the face during a fight and generally being an ass.

The most critical change was re-editing the helicopter scene. The Joker was meant to push her off the ramp to kill her, but in the movie, it’s changed to him saving her life. Warner Bros. got cold feet about the domestic violence angle so it became an emo love story instead.
