10 Dumbest Decisions By Lord Of The Rings Characters

5. Boromir Tries To Steal The Ring

Although Pippin's actions in Moria might have put the pieces in place to break up The Fellowship, this was the catalyst that set it in motion.

Boromir was a trusted member of the titular group, and although he had some moments of suspicion, he ultimately contributed as a hero. That was up until he made the dumb decision to attempt to take The Ring from Frodo, resulting in the Hobbit setting out on his own.

After passing through The Pillar of Kings, The Fellowship sought some rest, and Frodo ventured off - as he is want to do. But soon, he ran into Boromir, who delved into madness and attempted to convince Frodo to give him The Ring, and attacked him after he refused.

With all the pressure put on Boromir by his father, the corruption of The Ring and humanity's weak will, it made sense that he would fall victim to the pull of power. Even Boromir himself had some post act clarity as he instantly regretted his decision and tried to beg Frodo's forgiveness, but it was too late.

He redeemed himself by fighting to the bitter end to save Merry and Pippin before his untimely demise. So at least he got to die with honour, despite making a truly dumb decision that destroyed his mission.
