Defining Dumb Moment: Bringing a baby into a post-apocalyptic world in which silence is key to survival.

Living in a world overtaken by alien monsters with giant ear holes and hyper-sensitive hearing who will find you and kill you if you make a sound is pretty unfortunate situation for any human given what talkative, noise-making creatures we are.

The Abbott family adapt to their new circumstances fairly well at first but then parents Evelyn and Lee make the jaw-dropping decision to bring a newborn baby into the mix. A mewling, squalling infant that will most likely mark its entry into the world with an ear-splitting cry and spend much of its time thereafter crying.

That’s not exactly the brightest idea in a world in which something as inadvertent as a cough, a sneeze or an audible fart will get you killed and especially not long after you’ve just witnessed your youngest son get gobbled up by monsters for doing what kids do naturally and making a noise.

And this is after the film opens in a pharmacy where the family are silently ransacking for medication and could’ve easily picked up some condoms or contraceptive pills. Or they could’ve, you know, abstained from sex and ridden it out (or not, as the case may be) until the whole alien monster apocalypse thing blew over because bringing another child into that mess is not only stupid but irresponsible too.
