10 Fascinating Facts About Disney's Pinocchio
1. The Film Achieved An Oscar Feat That Wouldn't Be Matched For 24 Years
It’s natural to assume nowadays that Disney will clean up Animation and Music awards at the Academy Awards every year, with them creating some of the finest animation around and the most iconic songs of all time. Pinocchio was the first to start this trend as, at the 13th Academy Awards, it won the Leigh Harline, Paul Smith and Ned Washington an Oscar for Best Original Score, and unsurprisingly Best Original Song for “When You Wish Upon A Star”.
Disney wasn’t the first to win these two categories in one ceremony, as The Wizard Of Oz did so the year before, but Pinocchio was the first Disney film to earn Oscars for both Best Original Song and Score. It would be another 24 years when, at the 37th Academy Awards, Mary Poppins would win both of these awards: Original Score for the Sherman Brothers, and Original Song for “Chim Chim Cher-ee”.
It wouldn’t be until the 62nd Academy Awards that a Disney Animation Studios film would receive the same two awards, with The Little Mermaid earning a Best Original Score for Alan Menkin and a Best Original Song for “Under The Sea” (“Kiss The Girl” was also nominated).
