10 Film Characters Who Were Secretly The Villain All Along
1. Dean - Overboard
There are plenty of messed up romantic comedies in the world - enough that you'd be forgiven for thinking that producers of the genre are attempting to outdo one another in creating the most creepy "romance".
But they can't possibly be doing that, because the most messed up romantic comedy was created years ago, in 1987, when Overboard was released.
The film covers a rich, haughty woman named Joanna Stayton, who is in an accident that gives her amnesia. Dean, a man who worked on the heiress' boat, decides the only logical thing to do is to kidnap this wounded woman and to convince her she is his long dead wife, getting her to do all the chores and take care of his kids.
Joanna is naturally pretty disturbed when she finds out her entire life is a lie, but somehow the fact that Dean committed several crimes isn't enough to make him undeserving of his happy ending. Because her husband, Grant, is basically evil, it's made out like Dean is the obvious good choice, and thus Joanna totally forgives him on the spot, instead of at least getting some couples counselling.
In 2018, the film was remade, only with the genders of Joanna and Dean swapped around. In a true gesture of gender equality, the female Dean - named Kate - is exactly as messed up in her dealings with the amnesiac Leo.
