10 Great Movies With 100% Rotten Tomatoes Ratings You Probably Missed

5. Hiroshima Mon Amour

While we're on the subject of the French New Wave, another great movie with 100% Rotten Tomatoes rating you may well have missed came out at the birth of this radical cinematic movement: Alain Resnais's Hiroshima Mon Amour. You'd be forgiven for thinking that you were watching a documentary, judging from the opening scenes in Hiroshima Mon Amour - indeed, Resnais utilises stock footage to great effect to construct a dream-like atmosphere around the two central characters, a French actress living in Japan (Emmanuelle Riva) and her Japanese architect lover (Eiji Okada). Flashbacks are interweaved with abstract monologues and lengthy conversations to achieve a heightened impression of the fluidity of relationships. Resnais was largely credited for kickstarting the French New Wave with Hiroshima Mon Amour, playing with the conventions of linear filmmaking and, in the words of renowned French director Eric Rohmer, producing "the first modern film of sound cinema."
