10 Great Movies Starring The Cast Of Buffy The Vampire Slayer

4. The Italian Job

The Italian Job 2003
Paramount Pictures

Unnecessary remakes have long been a tedious inevitability in Hollywood, but F. Gary Gray’s 2003 movie shouldn’t be lumped in with the Get Carters and Psychos of this world. Critics at the time were pleasantly surprised, but the glossy modern Italian Job is infrequently mentioned these days.

It’s hard to see it ever being rediscovered, but if you’re looking for a taught and downright fun action movie of an evening, it’s well worth digging out. Key to its success is its preservation of the original’s sense of humour, much of which is provided by Seth Green.

He’s the skittery, back talking computer expert who insists he was the real inventor of Napster. This is a 2003 movie, so much of his “hacking” is downright cartoonish - plenty of clackety clacking on the keyboard and scenes in which he hijacks the city of Los Angeles’ entire traffic system so as to conduct the escape from a heist.

Nothing’s taken too seriously, but Gray’s genuine skill as a director, alongside the excellent cast (including Charlize Theron and Ed Norton) puts this a cut or two above other films of its ilk.
