2. Shaun of the Dead
Any film that advertises itself as 'a romantic comedy with zombies' is bound to be good. 2004's
Shaun of the Dead is no exception to this rule, having only just been pipped to top spot on this figurative podium. The first instalment of the Blood and Ice Cream Trilogy and 'prequel' to
Hot Fuzz was the first instance in which Simon Pegg and Nick Frost appeared together on the silver screen. Featuring some of the most brutal and horrific zombie feeding scenes of the time, the fact that the comedy of this film still managed to dominate over the ever present 'biters' truly demonstrates just how funny it actually was and is. Indeed, this element can be credited to both Pegg and co-writer/director Edgar Wright, who, having served similar roles on cult TV series, Spaced (also featuring Frost), had grown to develop a chemistry that would play a key part in presenting Shaun's story to the world. The inclusion of familiar faces Lucy Davis, Dylan Moran and Jessica Stevenson meant that this film was almost exclusively catered towards the British public; but then, isn't it about time we had something of our own?
