10 Harsh Realities That Completely Ruin Classic Film Happy Endings
8. When Harry Met Sally - Divorce
The Happy Ending
After years of emotionally abusing Sally, Harry gets lonely on New Year's Eve, realises the one person he wants to be with is the one he keeps using as a doormat. Luckily, despite the abuse, Sally is pretty easily manipulated by a few apologies, and the two fall into each other's arms to live happily and neurotically ever after.
The Harsh Reality
No matter how you dress it up, Harry is still an almighty scoundrel, no amount of apologies can change someone's human nature, especially when they have proved themselves time and time again to be an awful, though entertaining creature.
So Harry probably swept Sally up in another whirlwind of emotion, and they got married and were happy for a while, but it would only be a matter of time before the cycle started again, and Harry entered his self-destructive, self-obsessed stage, and pushed his wife away. Harry was lonely, said sorry and basically tricked Sally into loving him.
That's not a strong foundation for relationship longevity.
