The 2016 Ghostbusters was a failure by all accounts. Like Suicide Squad, the movie's first trailer gave it a bit of hype, with audiences seeming excited for this new vision of The Ghostbusters with some very successful and very funny female comedians.

The movie, however, did not live up to that hype, with a raft of criticism and an audience score of 50% on Rotten Tomatoes. Part of this was due to the characters all clashing and trying to be the comedy relief of the movie, as well as the general unfunniness.

Ghostbusters came in with the trend of movies that reboot popular franchises with female casts. While this could be seen as a positive movement, with more movies coming out with female leads, it can tire audiences who are getting sick of reboot movies.

In the trailers for the upcoming Ghostbusters: Afterlife, it is stated that there hasn't been a ghost seen in 30 years, retconning the 2016 Ghostbusters as never having happened in the movies canon.

Rebooting a movie as classic and beloved as Ghostbusters is tricky, and doing it badly leads to the movie being even worse than if it had stood alone.
