10 Hilarious Behind The Scenes Facts About The Worst Movies Ever
3. The Director Of Highlander II Tried To Get His Name Taken Off
With a lot of bad movies, the creators will come out against it years later, reflecting on their own failure with the benefit of hindsight. But then there are terrible movies that the crew themselves lobby against during production.
With Highlander II: The Quickening, the bonding company who financed the movie was constantly getting involved in the production, because non-creative people interfering in the creative process always works out for everyone. As a result of all the meddling, director Russell Mulcahy hated the way the film ended up, walking out during the premiere after 15 minutes. Actor Christopher Lambert also tried to leave when it became clear how much of a disaster this was turning into, but his contract wouldn't let him walk away.
In fact, Director Russell Mulcahy despised the final product so much, he desperately tried to get his name taken off, replaced with the credit Alan Smithee. If you aren't aware, that's the pseudonym directors use when they don't want to be associated with their movie. Some films where the director used the Smithee pseudonym have included The Birds II: Land's End and Hellraiser: Bloodline. Some high quality stuff.
But again for contractual reasons, Mulcahy couldn't get his name taken off, with the producers threatening to sue if he tried. And so he was forced to forever live with having his name displayed prominently on this awful film. Poor guy.
