10 Horror Films That Wasted Their Villain
6. The Lipstick-Face Demon - Insidious
James Wan's Insidious certainly does a solid job introducing audiences to its sublimely creepy antagonist, the rather Darth Maul-esque supernatural entity commonly referred to by fans as the Lipstick-Face Demon (Joseph Bishara).
Few who've seen Insidious will forget the instantly iconic moment where the demon appears behind Josh (Patrick Wilson), scaring the hell out of his mother Lorraine (Barbara Hershey).
It's a perfect example of a well-crafted jump scare, and one which keeps the audience on edge for the demon's reappearance later on.
Sadly that goodwill is largely squandered in the film's finale, where a trip to the demon's lair becomes a goofy theme park ride of increasingly silly shenanigans as the demon chases Josh and his son Dalton (Ty Simpkins) around and runs along the walls.
Though the demon still doesn't have a huge role in the movie, it's a classic horror movie pitfall of over-exposing the monster to the audience.
Seeing the demon run around and mug up-close to the camera is more laughable than scary by film's end, sadly.
