10 Horror Films That Wasted Their Villain

5. The Tooth Fairy - Darkness Falls

Darkness Falls is a largely forgotten horror film released in 2003 centered around the most unlikely of antagonists - a vengeance-filled spectre called Matilda Dixon, but known popularly as the Tooth Fairy.

The film kicks off with an impressively constructed flashback set-piece in which protagonist Kyle's (Chaney Kley) mother is murdered by the aforementioned entity.

The sequence, favouring uneasy suspense above all else, concludes with Kyle's mother's death and the sublimely creepy visual of the Tooth Fairy floating above the bathroom door while a traumatised Kyle is cowered inside.

It's a smart, moody introduction to a villain who sadly becomes infinitely less interesting and decidedly more generic with each passing scene, courtesy of a blander-than-oatmeal script and slack direction.

That opening sequence implied something far more creative was on the cards, though.
