10 Horror Movie Characters Who Deserved To Die
6. Eric - The Ruins
In an absolute clanger of a ridiculous death, we have Shawn Ashmore's Eric from The Ruins.
Released to mixed reception in 2008, The Ruins sees a group of travelers journey to (you'll never guess where) an ancient Mayan ruin in search of a German tourist's missing brother. Unbeknownst to the group however, the ruins are inhabited by sentient, bloodthirsty vines which hunt the group like a pack of venomous snakes on PCP. Yes, vines.
The film's ridiculous subject matter lends perfectly to ridiculous demises, and Eric duly obliges the audience. His girlfriend Stacy is infected by the insidious vines after they grow into a wound on her leg; before too long, they are visibly moving in her head.
Reasonably enough in such circumstances (i.e. with a living, evil plant crawling around inside you) Stacy loses her grip on reality, gauging herself with a knife to try and cut the vines out. She is so deranged that she slices group member Jeff's hand as he tries to help her. A person attempting to play real life Operation on themselves would usually serve as the mother of all red flags to anybody with even a flicker of thought in their head. However, step forward, Eric.
As Eric tries to calm his demented girlfriend who is quite clearly beyond the point of no return, she mortally wounds him with a knife through the chest before his dying body is dragged away by the maleficent vines in a disastrously farcical sequence. Another case of a character so moronic that a gruesome end was inevitable.
