The Lost Boys: iconic '80s vampire movie, Joel Schumacher’s defining work, and the film that inspired Buffy the Vampire Slayer and kept the fire burning for another generation.

Schumacher redefines the vampire with bleach-blonde badass biker boy David (Kiefer Sutherland) and his crew of rowdy hoods, who try to recruit Santa Carla newcomer Michael (Jason Patric) into their gang, to never grow old, never die, and have a bit of fun on the boardwalk. While it’s obvious who the vampires are from the start, with David and company hardly keeping themselves to the shadows, their big boss - or even that they have a big boss - is saved for the film’s conclusion. Turns out meek and mild video shop owner Max (Edward Herrmann) is the head honcho. Who would have guessed? Well, us, if we’d been watching carefully.

At the beginning of The Lost Boys, David and his gang of hoodlums show up at Max's video store, but when Max tells them to stay away, they back off and obey, showing an uncharacteristic respect for authority - and not just any authority, but a particularly dorky and square guy in an ill-fitting suit.

Schumacher doesn’t stop there, though, rubbing it in our faces in a later scene when, dating Michael’s mum, Max visits the Emerson household and meets Michael at the door, saying, "You're the man of the house, and I'm not coming in until you invite me." Well.
