10 Horror Movies That Subtly Spoil The Ending Early
6. Hereditary (2017)
Ari Aster’s first feature is still his best, arguably dethroning The Exorcist as not just the scariest film of all time, but the best possession flick on the block.
We join the Graham family during a time of grief and change, when their secretive matriarch Ellen Leigh (Pat Barnett Carr) has passed away, leaving Annie (Toni Collette), Steve (Gabriel Byrne), and their children Peter (Alex Wolff) and Charlie (Milly Shapiro) to connect with the strange reality she has vacated and reap the consequences. Sinister things start happening, as the family is plagued by nightmares, death, and minor possessions, revealing the presence of a demonic entity that Ellen was preparing the family children to host.
Shocking stuff. But way, way early on, Aster casually blows the whole thing wide open in a throwaway scene. Mourning her mother, Annie visits a bereavement support group and talks about how Ellen became close to the family once Charlie was born, and took on a big role in raising her. More than this, Annie mentions her dead brother - this in itself is a piece of foreshadowing for the fates of her other family members - who committed suicide young.
The real revelation, though, comes from the note Annie says he left behind, which accused Ellen of "putting people inside him"…
