10 Horror Movies Which Insult Your Intelligence
1. The Turning
Adapted from Henry James' The Turn of the Screw, The Turning follows Kate (Mackenzie Davis), a teacher tasked with tutoring young orphan Flora Fairchild (Brooklyn Prince). When Flora's eccentric brother Miles (Finn Wolfhard) returns home, Kate starts uncovering dark secrets from the family's past.
Even though the book was overflowing with innovation, none of it made it into this big-screen adaption. Nothing sounds natural due to the forced exposition and first-draft dialogue. Despite being talented actors, Davis and Wolfhard never feel comfortable in their roles, thanks to their AI-sounding lines.
Rather than using the supernatural element sparingly, ghosts are regularly paraded around with distracting CGI, diminishing any potential impact. And whoever thought a heavy rock soundtrack suited a gothic folk-tale was seriously mistaken.
Then there's the ending. The final rug-pull isn't just stupid in its own right, but it heavily suggests the filmmakers either didn't understand the source material or deliberately wanted to offend any loyalists to the novel. As such, anyone who has the misfortune of watching The Turning will be turning it off long before the credits roll.
