10 Horror Movies Which Insult Your Intelligence

8. Ouija

Alien Covenant

In Stiles White's paranormal thriller Ouija, a group of friends play around with an Ouija board in the hope of speaking to a recently deceased acquaintance. After releasing a dark spirit, the group realise they might not just see their dead friend, but they may soon join him.

Even though Ouija has a compelling premise, this Michael Bay-produced horror is let down by bland characters, non-existent tension, and cheap special effects. Even if Ouija was competently made, it's difficult to stay engaged since the actors seem utterly uninvested, no matter how much danger they're in. Also, Ouija commits the cardinal sin of mistaking loud banging for effective jump scares.

With the benefit of hindsight, the only good that came from this trash is Mike Flanagan's prequel, Ouija: Origin of Evil. Despite being based on a garbage property, that second film was a triumph due to its nuanced characters, heightened atmosphere, and compelling story. Origin of Evil also highlights the flaws of Ouija further, since it proves the filmmakers did absolutely nothing, despite having a solid concept.
