10 Horror Movies Which Insult Your Intelligence

4. The Thing (2011)

Due to The Thing's long-lasting legacy, it's surprising it took so long for a follow-up to receive the greenlight.

Unfortunately, 2011's The Thing falls apart because it fumbles what made John Carpenter's classic so iconic. As in, the special effects. What's worse, this prequel used practical effects during filmmaking but swapped them out at the last minute with unconvincing CGI.

Though the prosthetics and animatronics are out of this world, they can only be seen in behind-the-scenes footage, and anyone who saw the movie had to settle with the sloppiest computer-generated effects imaginable.

Even if the visuals were up to standard, though, this version of The Thing still wouldn't work due to the abysmally written characters.

Although dumb characters are common in horror, it's more noticeable here since the group behaves as if they have no survival instincts whatsoever. The lead, Kate Lloyd, insists that everybody should stick together, yet she repeatedly wanders off in a -50 degrees blizzard while a shape-shifting alien is on the loose. And any time something looks suspicious or dangerous, the ensemble marches towards it as if they're hoping for the sweet release of death.

Although nobody makes it out alive here, it's a mystery how these dummies didn't die sooner.
