10 Insane Skills Actors Learned For Movie Roles

1. John David Washington Learned How To Talk Backwards (Tenet)

Christopher Nolan's timey-wimey spy thriller is his most complex film to date - which is saying something, coming from the guy who brought us Memento, Inception, and Interstellar - so it isn't really surprising to learn that it was also a complex one to shoot.

A lot of scenes in Tenet feature "inverted" people moving backwards through time, and since Nolan loves to do everything practically (if possible), his actors had to learn how to move in reverse, just so these scenes could be shot as realistically as possible.

Leading man John David Washington told Good Morning America that he learned how to "blink, walk, talk, fight, run, block" and punch backwards, which basically meant that he had to fight his own instincts, and "unlearn" his normal way of moving.

While Tenet's sound mix leaves a lot to be desired, its visuals are among the most breathtaking that Nolan has ever put to film. Watching characters fight and move in reverse is an extraordinary sight to behold, and one of the main reasons why it looks so good is because it was done with as little CGI as possible.

Based on Washington's comments, the cast certainly had to work hard to achieve that final result. soduK.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
