1. Anakin Skywalker - Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menance
Even if somebody could travel back in time and rewrite
Episode I, I don't know what they could do with Anakin Skywalker to ensure that he actually lived up to the hype. Because - let's face it -
Star Wars: The Phantom Menace was probably the most hyped movie of all time, and I can't see another movie matching the expectations attached to this one any time soon (or ever, even). George Lucas is to blame, sure, but not entirely: what was he supposed to do with this character? One could argue that nothing would have really matched up to what we had each imagined. Which is why it was a terrible idea to get into bed with
Star Wars prequels in the first place, of course. Why explain something that is far better rendered inside people's imaginations already? So when we first met Anakin Skywalker on Tatooine and realised that it was the cutesy kid from
Jingle All The Way, we were all shocked and confused, but pressed onwards as we all still wanted to try and enjoy the movie. But seeing Darth Vader - the most famous villain in movie history - rendered as a bad child actor was too much for fans to handle. It marked the end of a dream, and gave rise to a George Lucas backlash that continues to haunt the man's dreams today.
