10 Major Thoughts Coming Out Of Avengers: Infinity War
5. The Action Is Good, But Not Great
Slightly disappointing given that their work on the Captain America sequels provided some of the best action sequences ever seen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but many of the set-pieces in Infinity War are uninspired and resort to the standard 'CGI things punching CGI things' stuff we've seen a thousand times before.
The Russo brothers proved in The Winter Soldier's opening scene and elevator fight that they could fit rapid, close-quarters action into the framework of the MCU but apart from the ground-level scrap in Edinburgh, Infinity War fails to capture any of that intensity.
While Infinity War's action is definitely more ambitious, the cross-cutting between two intergalactic dust-ups during the third act isn't quite as exciting as it should be, despite delivering plenty of crowd-pleasing moments. The Wakanda scenes are too reminiscent of both previous Avengers movies that pitted our heroes against an army of disposable henchmen, and much of the action on Titan feels artificial and weightless as we watch wave after wave of pixels relentlessly crashing into each other with a sprinkling of one-liners.
For directors that set such a high bar with Civil War's classic airport battle, its a shame that the Russos couldn't quite meet the heightened expectations that came with Infinity War.
