10 More Awesome Movies That Didn't Deserve To Bomb

7. Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story

Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story is such a savagely hilarious takedown of the musical biopic that it basically scared the genre out of Hollywood for a decade-or-so, and though it remains a much-loved parody almost 20 years later, it was a total box office bust on original release.

Even with a fairly modest $35 million budget and the presence of comedy star John C. Reilly, Walk Hard made just $20.6 million worldwide - barely half its budget.

A big part of the problem is that movies parodying a very specific subject are tough to market to a mainstream audience, and it certainly didn't help that the parody was a firmly dying genre by 2007, especially given the number of low-effort, post-Scary Movie romps sloughed into cinemas throughout the 2000s.

Simply, there's a limited audience for a movie making fun of generic musical biopics, and Sony also massively shot themselves in the foot by releasing it four days before Christmas.

This just isn't the sort of movie people want to go see around the holidays, not to ignore the fact that it was competing against the far more commercial likes of I Am Legend, National Treasure: Book of Secrets, and Sweeney Todd.
