Dark Harvest is an adaptation of Norman Partridge's fantasy horror novel of the same name. The story centres around a pumpkin-headed creature called October Boy who rises from a cornfield every Halloween. The only way anyone can leave the neighbouring village is by capturing October Boy on this faithful night.

The premise may sound whimsically Burtonesque but anyone who's read the novel knows the story is deeply unsettling. Even though the darker themes could have been toned down to widen the demographic, this adaptation will be fully embrace its horror roots, as it should.

Due to the film's lack of A-list stars, Dark Harvest may not be on many people's radar. But with David Slade in the director's chair, this adaptation shouldn't be glossed over. Slade has proven to be an astoundingly versatile director with his work on Hannibal, American Gods, Hard Candy, Black Mirror, and Breaking Bad. (He also made Twilight Eclipse but we'll forgive him for that.) Dark Harvest mightn't be a recognised name at the moment but it may very well become the underrated hit of the year.
