10 Most Criminally Underrated Blockbusters Since 2000
2. Edge Of Tomorrow (2014)
It's that man Cruise again, with another superb blockbuster that struggled to do the business expected of it at the box office. Edge Of Tomorrow, released this past summer, debuted in third place on it's opening weekend. When a gigantic blockbuster starring Tom Cruise battling aliens doesn't at least make it to number one on opening weekend, Hollywood bean-counters begin to panic Truly, this says a lot about how the cinema-going habits of the world are changing somewhat, and that is no bad thing. In fact, it's awesome that smaller movies like The Fault In Our Stars can find such large audiences. It just sucks that it came at the expense of Edge Of Tomorrow. Perhaps it was the confused identity of the film's title that held it back. Initially known as All You Need Is Kill, after the Japanese novel the movie was based on, the title was changed to the fairly forgettable Edge Of Tomorrow a few months before release. Interestingly, the title has altered slightly again on home video, as it is now known as Edge Of Tomorrow: Live. Die. Repeat. This is presumably to try and squeeze some profit out of the thing by sprucing up the title and marketing it slightly differently again. Perhaps it was audience's current lukewarm reaction to Tom Cruise as a tent-pole star. The only bona-fide hit that Cruise has had in nearly a decade was Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol in 2011. Oblivion, which directly preceded Edge Of Tomorrow, had a decidedly mixed reception. It seemed people thought these two films were too similar on the surface, even though the only real similarities is that they are both science-fiction films. Whatever the reason, we hope it finds a new lease of life on DVD and Blu-Ray, as it is a brilliantly constructed, kinetic and crucially, fun, movie that was directed with verve by Doug Liman.
