10 Movie Characters Who Broke Their Own Rules
2. Billy Beane - Moneyball
Is there a better sports movie than Moneyball? Telling the story of Billy Beane's (Brad Pitt) attempts to reinvent the Oakland A's baseball team after losing their three most important players is utterly compelling and heart-warming.
The radical new strategy Beane and Peter Brand (Jonah Hill) took was inspired by Bill James' Moneyball theory. Essentially, when recruiting players, they looked only at the important statistics and didn't care about the kinds of things old-school scouts valued, like age, image, and star power.
Beane's new theory pissed off his entire staff, as he brought in players they would never have dreamed of, players like Jeremy Giambi (Nick Porrazzo). Jeremy was previously black-marked due to his off-field antics, but Beane persisted thanks to his on-base percentage and relatively low salary. There was a limit, however.
In a move that not only frustrated Peter Brand but broke the rules of everything they were trying to build with the Moneyball theory, Beane traded Jeremy after seeing him dance around the locker room like an idiot after a big loss. Billy couldn't have been more in on the strategy that Peter had brought to him, but even he couldn't stand to keep a man like that on his team, no matter what the theory said.
