Remaking the influential 1978 George A. Romero horror film is a dangerous task, but Zack Snyder became a breakthrough star with his directing of this truly terrifying zombie tale.

Dawn of the Dead was released in 2004 and follows a similar plot to the original. Survivors of a sudden zombie outbreak barricade themselves in a shopping mall as the building becomes surrounded by large swarms of infected.

What sets this remake apart from the original is that the zombies are fast-moving, rather than slow and lumbered like in the classics. These zombies are more violent and lively, and ultimately run like professional athletes to make them more threatening. This makes Dawn of the Dead one of the scariest zombie films of all time, and a worthy remake of the dated original.

The Dawn of the Dead remake is not only a great horror film that pays homage to an original classic, but it also became the launch pad for two of the most influential directors today. Director Zack Snyder went on to make Watchmen, Man of Steel, and Justice League. While the writer of the film, James Gunn, brought us Guardians of the Galaxy.
