10 Movie Roles That Traumatised Actors
1. Shelley Duvall (The Shining)
Another film with a cast under the terrible rule of Kubrick, it was Shelley Duvall that took the brunt of his near-psychopathic obsession with filming the perfect shots. Consistently pushed to the edge of her sanity throughout the 13-month shooting schedule, Duvall was hardly acting when it came to her nervous breakdowns captured on screen.
Under so much stress her hair actually fell out, Duvall was forced to film shots over and over again, no matter how stressed or ill she became during the process. Recording the bat scene a record 127 times in a row, Duvall was sent on an emotional roller coaster that Kubrick had no intention of letting her out of. Treating her differently to her other cast mates, it was only Duvall that was subjected to Kubrick's mental torture - that she herself described as 'almost unbearable'.
Forced to cry for 12 hours a day for nine months straight, Duvall's character was under duress that she didn't have to fake. Kubrick consistently belittled her acting skill in front of cast and crew, treating her with a disrespect he reserved only for her. In any case, Duvall got through it - but the experience has had a lasting effect on both her mental health and her career trajectory.
