10 Movie Villains Who Were Fatally Miscast

3. James Franco - Homefront

James Franco is an oddly inconsistent actor. He can be great, such as in 127 Hours, The Disaster Artist and Spring Breakers, but he can also be absolutely awful, such as in the Spider-Man Trilogy, as an Oscar host in 2011, and in this.

In this mediocre Jason Statham thriller, James Franco plays the main villain, a viscous drug dealer named Gator. There were quite likely at least 30 other Hollywood stars (that's not an exaggeration) more suited to this role than Franco, so who knows why he was cast?

Franco is a rather versatile actor, but he's not someone who can really do bad-ass, rage-filled performances, which is what this role required and he falls ridiculously flat whenever he tries to be intimidating. He doesn't look the part either and as a result, this is one remarkably un-threatening villain.

Winona Ryder did a far better job in the movie as the supporting villain, so the better thing to do would've been to ditch this character altogether and make her the lead villain instead.
