10 Movies Audiences Couldn't Handle

4. The Substance

Horror movies typically don't do too well when it comes to the Academy Awards, but The Substance was different. Coralie Fargeat's outing was nominated in an incredible five categories, including Best Actress, Best Picture, and Best Director, and took home the statue for Best Makeup and Hairstyling.

The film follows Demi Moore's Elisabeth Sparkle, an aging actor who uses the titular substance to create a younger version of herself, though of course it's not that straightforward, and turns into one of the most gruesome body horror movies in recent years, possibly ever.

This particular horror sub-genre, synonymous with the likes of David Cronenberg and such outings as The Fly among others, immediately had a new favourite with the release of The Substance in 2024. However, not everyone was able to get through it, as its gruesome nature had reports of people fleeing the cinema.

What body-horror film would be complete without making an audience's collective skin crawl? The Substance was critically acclaimed for it to the point of being recognised by the Academy, however some people weren't even able to last through the first 20 minutes.
