10 Movies That Are FINALLY Happening

7. Shrek 5

Shrek the third
Dreamworks

Considering that the first four Shrek movies grossed almost $3 billion combined, and the IP has remained phenomenally popular for almost 25 years, it's frankly astonishing that DreamWorks hasn't kept milking the gravy train for every last possible drop.

Instead, the last mainline Shrek film was 2010's Shrek Forever After, after which fans have only had two Puss in Boots-led spin-offs.

Shrek was initially planned to be a five-film franchise by DreamWorks CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg, though he ultimately felt that Shrek Forever After brought the series to a fitting close, and in an uncharacteristically restrained move for Hollywood, cancelled the fifth movie.

Katzenberg did suggest the possibility of Shrek 5 in the years that followed, though, and after Puss in Boots: The Last Wish hinted at more Shrek adventures, the sequel was finally announced in April 2023. Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz were all later confirmed to be reprising their roles, with voice recording sessions beginning in early 2024, while the film is currently set for a December 23, 2026 release date.
