10 Movies That Had MASSIVE Tomatometer Drops
6. Ghost In The Shell (2017)
Initial Score: 65%
Final Score: 43% (22% drop)
The knives were out for the Scarlett Johansson-starring live-action Ghost in the Shell remake long before it hit cinemas, with particular concern over the "whitewashed" casting of Johansson in the role of The Major.
But the first swath of reviews seemed to suggest that the film, while not amazing by any stretch of the imagination, was basically a better-than-expected effort, landing a respectable enough 65%.
But after almost 300 reviews were in the bag, the score had fallen to an underwhelming 43% - less than half the original anime's 96% - with a greater majority of critics complaining about its generic storytelling, hollow-yet-stylish action, and an especially divisive decision to work the casting controversy into the plot itself.
Neither broadly praised nor critically panned, Ghost in the Shell wound up in that "bleh" middle-ground where movies are so easily forgotten - and indeed, it quickly was.
