10 Movies That Pissed People Off Before They Even Released
8. The Super Mario Bros. Movie

If there is one gaming character more recognisable than Sonic the Hedgehog, it's Super Mario. After debuting way back in 1981, Mario has become a staple of pop culture, and after the poor showing of the Super Mario Bros. movie from 1993, there was a lot of excitement around the 2023 effort.
However, the anticipation stuttered and stalled slightly with the announcement of Chris Pratt being cast as Mario. The character's voice is just as iconic as his moustache and overalls, and with Pratt not coming from Italian heritage, many weren't happy at all with the choice.
Things got worse with the release of the film's first trailer. The animation looked absolutely stunning, but right at the end, Pratt's Mario spoke with a Brooklyn accent that once again sent the internet into a spiral. There was outrage, with some saying that Charles Martinet, Mario's video game voice actor, should have taken the role.
That being said, since its release, The Super Mario Bros. Movie has gone on to smash any and all expectations, at the time of writing is the 18th highest-grossing movie of all time, and has a sequel in production. Maybe there really is more to a film than a first impression.
