The true story of student Christopher McCandless who, after giving away all of his money and possessions, hitch-hikes to the wilderness of Alaska.

But for poor Chris, becoming one with nature isn't all it's cracked up to be - after poisoning himself on the local vegetation, he is trapped by a great river blocking his trail. And so, ignominiously, he starves to death in the middle of nowhere with only a rusty old camper van for company.

The subsequent movie was written and directed by Sean Penn, and is roughly as uplifting as you'd expect any Sean Penn movie to be - while also being genuinely, surprisingly uplifting in some places, to be fair. Until it isn't.
