10 Movies Where The Hero Should've Died

4. Batman - The Dark Knight Rises

In the closing moments of The Dark Knight Rises, Batman realises an atomic bomb in Gotham is minutes away from turning the city into a crater. After he attaches the explosive to his aerial craft, Batman flies it out to sea just before it explodes. Although he saved the city, the caped crusader is killed in the blast.

Or so it seemed. Just before the film concluded, we learn Batman's craft was on auto-pilot, implying our hero wasn't in the ship when it blew up. We then cut to a shot of Alfred bumping into Bruce Wayne, who is living abroad in peace.

Even though Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy was masterfully crafted, there's a couple of issues with this ending. Being a tragic superhero, it seemed more fitting for Batman to give up his life for the greater good, rather than riding off in the sunset. (I mean, it worked for Logan and Iron Man.) Also, Bruce Wayne's plan doesn't make sense. Why is he walking around in public after faking his death? Isn't he going to be recognised in five minutes?

Furthermore, the way he survived the atomic blast doesn't add up. We see Batman is still in his craft seconds before it went kaboom. It doesn't matter how deep he was in the water - you can't swim away from a nuclear blast! If the fire didn't incinerate him, he would've been killed by the shockwave or the radiation!
