10 Predictions For What The DCEU Will Look Like 10 Years From Now
7. More Standalone Stories
With it becoming clear that Warner Bros. isn't capable of creating a shared world that flawlessly connects their movies, the studio is moving to standalone stories which don't necessarily lead to what has become known as a "cinematic universe." That's why Aquaman and Shazam! only vaguely referenced the wider DCEU, and why The Suicide Squad is considered a reboot AND sequel.
Now, with Joker proving to be such a hit, you have to believe that films which stand by themselves could become a priority for the studio. These wouldn't need to lead to larger stories or even connect to other franchises; they're just one-off stories moviegoers can enjoy without needing an encyclopedia!
These could take any number of forms, but it will mean that just because there's a Batman movie starring Robert Pattinson, it doesn't mean there can't be a Nightwing film as well which perhaps has a totally different rating, different actors as certain characters, and no links between each franchise. That's an approach which is working well for DC, and should continue to do so in the next decade.
