10 Questions You Should Be Asking About Batman Vs Superman

4. Are There Too Many Characters?

While Man of Steel featured an impressive ensemble cast, the movie's strongest point definitely wasn't its characterization. With the focus largely on Henry Cavill's Superman and his struggles with daddy issues and destiny, the supporting players weren't given much chance to add depth to their characters. Perhaps the biggest oversight was the relationship between Superman and Lois Lane; one of the most important aspects of the character was largely ignored and poorly written. While Russell Crowe and Kevin Costner were fine in their extended cameos, the likes of Amy Adams, Diane Lane, Laurence Fishburne and Harry Lennix really weren't given much to work with. Much of the problem lay with David Goyer's script, which favored on-the-nose messages and explosive set-pieces over any sense of narrative importance. Bringing on Argo writer Chris Terrio was a good move, but the feeling remains that there are simply far too many characters to be crammed into Batman v Superman to do all of them justice (no pun intended), especially when you consider the sheer volume of narrative groundwork that has to be laid, both to introduce new characters and expand the mythology of DC's shared cinematic universe. Along with the returning Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Diane Lane and Laurence Fishburne, the movie has to introduce Jesse Eisenberg's Lex Luthor, Ben Affleck's Batman, Jeremy Irons' Alfred and Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman as main characters. The supporting cast also brings Holly Hunter, Tao Okamota, Ray Fisher, Scoot McNairy, Callan Mulvey and Jena Malone into the mix, while there could also be appearances from Jason Momoa's Aquaman and Ezra Miller's Barry Allen to tie into the upcoming Justice League. With so much world-building and new characters to introduce, Terrio needs to put together one hell of a script to stop things from becoming too convoluted.

I don't do social media, so like or follow me in person but please maintain a safe distance or the authorities will be notified. Don't snap me though, I'll probably break. I was once labelled a misogynist on this very site in a twenty paragraph-long rant for daring to speak ill of the Twilight franchise. I stand by what I said, it's crap.
