10 Reasons Kong: Skull Island Might Be 2017's Most Surprising Success

8. It Looks Pretty Damn Funny

There's a lot to be said for humour. After a half a decade of gritty reboots and interpreting stories as grim and realistic (read: grey and brown), it appears the tide within the industry is turning.

You've only to look at the Marvel Cinematic Universe / DC Universe to witness this. Initially, DC tried to go "mature" to combat Marvel's animated tone, but criticism over the complete lack of lighthearted moments in Man Of Steel and Dawn Of Justice has caused Warner Brothers' to do a huge 180 - I mean, just look at how the Wonder Woman trailer differs in comparison to previous efforts.

Godzilla, too, was dark, stripping away much of the joy of the traditional monster movie. Kong: Skull Island, however, is ridiculous and knows it. It embraces it. From the confused pilot who wonders "is that a monkey?" before being smashed out of the sky to John C Reilly's realisation that the name "King Kong" sounds pretty damn ridiculous, it's obvious the film's main agenda is having a good time.
